Happy Independence Day

KGSJHS Library Greetings | By Gladys Wakat

The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands in the western Pacific, first declared its independence from Spanish colonial rule more than 120 years ago. This historic proclamation was led by General Emilio Aguinaldo. However, it wasn’t until 1962 that President Diosdado Macapagal officially recognized June 12 as a national holiday through a presidential proclamation.

On that landmark day in 1898, the Philippine flag was proudly raised for the first time during a spirited celebration that also marked the debut public performance of the national anthem.
